Dressing For Success On Interviews

1196040_stop_and_go_2There are few times when your clothes make more of an impression than on a job interview. From the second you walk in the door, the way you present yourself can make a power impression on the company you are interviewing with. But what kind of things should you focus on when dressing for your big interview? Here are four of the most important things to consider before leaving the house:

  • Avoid cologne. You don’t want to overwhelm the interviewer with scent, so even if it’s part of your normal routine, skip the cologne. It can be overpowering if you’re chatting one on one in a small office for a long time.
  • Dress up. We know it sounds obvious, but you need to look presentable for your interview. In most industries, this calls for a classic suit. Even in more casual industries, you should dress a little bit nicer than everyone in the office would dress.
  • Watch the details. Do your shoes and belt match? Are they clean? It sounds basic, but you want to look put together and not like you just grabbed a random outfit out of your closet. If they expect you to pay attention to detail in your job, they’ll want to see that quality in your dress.
  • Accessories. Don’t go overboard. Avoid most jewelry – all you really need is a watch and cufflinks. Anything else ends up being overkill. Carefully selected accessories should compliment your look, not overwhelm it!
